Why is IVF Treatment done?

In vitro fertilization treatment s performed for infertility problems or genetic issues related to infertility. IVF is offered to primary infertility in women over age 40. Below are the causes of infertility that IVF can treat:

How to prepare for IVF treatment:

  • • Ovarian Induction:

In this 1st step, some medications or with the help of some synthetic hormones given to a patient to increase the production of eggs, in case of usage of own egg. In every month's menstrual cycle, women produce one egg, but IVF requires multiple eggs. In this step, a doctor will regularly perform blood tests and ultrasound to monitor the production of eggs.

  • • Retrieval of Egg:

The egg retrieval procedure is done under general anesthesia, with the help of an ultrasound probe inserted into the vagina to identify follicles. Then the needle is inserted through the vagina and into the follicles to retrieve the eggs. In some cases, an abdominal ultrasound may use.

  • • Retrieval off sperm:

A male partner who will give a semen sample for fertilization of the egg artificially.

  • • Fertilization:

A lab technician will mix egg and sperm in a petri dish. If this procedure doesn’t produce an embryo, then a doctor may decide to use ICSI.

  • • Embryo Culture and Transfer:

The doctor and team will continuously monitor the fertilized egg to ensure that the cells divide and develop. Some genetic tests can be performed on embryos to avoid any issue. The embryo transfer procedure is done using mild sedatives. This procedure is painless, and a patient may feel mild cramping. Transferring procedure is done using the long, thin and flexible tube called catheter into the vagina, through the cervix. If IVF treatment is successful, then the embryo will be implanted in the lining of the uterus about six to 10 days after egg retrieval.

After the Procedure:

After embryo transfer, the patient can resume daily activities but avoid vigorous activities. If, after the procedure, if a person notices some severe or moderate pain, then contact the doctor.
