Bone Marrow Transplant
What is a Bone Marrow Transplant?
A Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), also known as a stem cell transplant, is a medical procedure used to replace damaged or destroyed bone marrow with healthy stem cells. It’s a critical treatment for certain blood cancers, blood disorders, and immune system diseases.
There are two main types:
- Autologous Transplant – Using the patient’s own stem cells
- Allogeneic Transplant – Using stem cells from a donor (related or unrelated)
Who Needs a Bone Marrow Transplant?
BMT is recommended for patients with:
- Leukemia (Acute and Chronic)
- Lymphoma (Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin)
- Multiple Myeloma
- Aplastic Anemia
- Thalassemia
- Sickle Cell Disease
- Certain Immune Deficiency Disorders
How Does the Procedure Work?
- The patient undergoes chemotherapy (and sometimes radiation) to destroy abnormal bone marrow.
- Healthy stem cells are infused into the bloodstream.
- These cells travel to the bone marrow and begin producing healthy blood cells.
Recovery can take several weeks to months, depending on the type of transplant and patient condition.
Benefits of Bone Marrow Transplant
- Offers a potential cure for many life-threatening blood diseases
- Can restore a fully functioning immune and blood system
- Improves quality of life and long-term survival
